Grooming and coat care in Shrivardhan

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Shrivardhan

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Shrivardhan?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Shrivardhan on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In humid coastal conditions water matters as much as food — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summer here peaks in April at about 36°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 19°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
