Is the Golden Retriever right for Akuhaito?

Akuhaito is high-rainfall tropical — near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention — and the Golden Retriever is a large-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Golden Retriever

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids dog the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Living with a Golden Retriever in Akuhaito

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 32°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Golden Retriever that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
