The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Makrana

The dry summer months is the stretch that needs planning. Daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Watch for signs of overheating — heavy panting, drooling or lethargy — during peak afternoons.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and arid conditions water matters as much as food — daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Is the Afghan Hound Puppy right for Makrana?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Afghan Hound Puppy adapts well to Makrana on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. A light summer trim (for double-coated breeds, never shave to the skin) helps comfort.

Space and the outdoors with a Afghan Hound Puppy

Homes around Makrana usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

Makrana is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Afghan Hound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C.

Most of the year's rain falls in August. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are September to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
