The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a medium dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a medium build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and arid conditions water matters as much as food — summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Is the Border Collie Puppy right for Makrana?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, and a medium-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. Makrana is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Border Collie needs real protection from that because its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C.

Most of the year's rain falls in August. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Border Collie puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
