Is the Shih Tzu right for Ghattu?

Ghattu is pleasant semi-tropical — the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, playful, affectionate, gentle breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Grooming and coat care in Ghattu

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Ghattu being pleasant semi-tropical, the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Ghattu

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Ghattu is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Ghattu stay warm, with even December nights around 15°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from August, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Ghattu are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
