Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, affectionate, gentle dog the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Kothakota is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Kothakota are mild, with December nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of Kothakota's rain falls in September. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Kothakota are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
