Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Scarlet Macaw. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Space and the outdoors with a Scarlet Macaw

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

Grooming and coat care in Thelkoloi

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Thelkoloi being coastal tropical, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Thelkoloi

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Thelkoloi, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Feeding a large bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Thelkoloi is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Scarlet Macaw needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C. A light sweater helps a large Scarlet Macaw on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Scarlet Macaw bird, the easiest months to arrive are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
