Feeding a medium cat here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a medium frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, keep water available and watch intake through the dry summer months.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the kitten approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Himalayan Kittens right for Thangadh?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, and a medium-sized cat feels that more than an owner expects. The Himalayan Kittens adapts well to Thangadh on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Walk early in the morning or after sunset when the ground is cool, never on hot pavement.

Thangadh is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Himalayan needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: a cool room with the curtains drawn in the afternoon, a tiled floor to lie on, and fresh water in more than one place.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Himalayan kitten, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
