The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the kitten approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a medium cat here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a medium frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Hardwar

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. Winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Himalayan Kittens than intensity ever will. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Grooming and coat care in Hardwar

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Hardwar being cold mountain, winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Health and vet care in Hardwar

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the cold winter season rather than during it. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Hardwar is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Himalayan needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: a cool room with the curtains drawn in the afternoon, a tiled floor to lie on, and fresh water in more than one place.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Himalayan kitten, the easiest months to arrive are October to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
