Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Ichchapuram usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Ichchapuram?

The Shih Tzu does well in Ichchapuram, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important. For a playful, affectionate, gentle, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and humid conditions water matters as much as food — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Ichchapuram

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Summer here peaks in April at about 38°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 17°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
