Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Makkuva

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Makkuva, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Makkuva being warm and humid, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Makkuva is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Rajapalayam needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Rajapalayam puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
