The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Doodle Puppy right for North?

North is subtropical plains — the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter — and the Doodle Puppy is a medium-sized, friendly, intelligent, playful breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Shift walks to early morning and late evening through the peak summer weeks.

Feeding a medium dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a medium build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In subtropical plains conditions water matters as much as food — the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Exercise and routine through the peak summer and winter swings in North

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In North, the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Provide shade and constant water in summer; a warm bed and blanket in winter.

Grooming and coat care in North

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. North being subtropical plains, the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Shift walks to early morning and late evening through the peak summer weeks.

North is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Doodle needs real protection from that: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 6°C.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Doodle puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, September, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
