The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In temperate highland conditions water matters as much as food — crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Is the Mudhol Hound Puppy right for Barsar?

Barsar is temperate highland — crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter — and the Mudhol Hound Puppy is a large-sized, alert, loyal, athletic breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Space and the outdoors with a Mudhol Hound Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a alert, loyal, athletic dog the fit is usually good either way.

Summer here peaks in June at about 38°C. That is manageable for a Mudhol Hound, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 5°C.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Mudhol Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, April, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
