Living with a Pointer Puppy in Nihri

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners across North India tend to find this dog a loyal, loving, confident companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Is the Pointer Puppy right for Nihri?

Nihri is cool hill — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others — and the Pointer Puppy is a large-sized, loyal, loving, confident breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Space and the outdoors with a Pointer Puppy

Homes around Nihri usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Nihri

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. The cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Pointer Puppy than intensity ever will. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

The city sits at about 1,546 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 31°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Pointer that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 2°C in January. A Pointer feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Pointer puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April to May: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
