Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In continental plains conditions water matters as much as food — the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Pointer Puppy right for Basia?

The Pointer Puppy does well in Basia, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter. For a loyal, loving, confident, large-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Keep deworming and vaccination on schedule — seasonal changes can stress the immune system.

Exercise and routine through the peak summer and winter swings in Basia

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Basia, the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Watch for seasonal coat shedding as temperatures change and brush accordingly.

Basia is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Pointer needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A Pointer has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Pointer puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
