Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Living with a Kanni Puppy in Velhe

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Kanni Puppy. Owners in the west tend to find this dog a loyal, shy, alert companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Homes around Velhe usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Velhe

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Velhe, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Summer here peaks in April at about 38°C. That is manageable for a Kanni, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 12°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
