Living with a Kanni Puppy in Wapung

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the North-East tend to find this dog a loyal, shy, alert companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Health and vet care in Wapung

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the extended rainy season rather than during it. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In high-rainfall tropical conditions water matters as much as food — near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Wapung

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Wapung, near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 28°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 6°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from April to September, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
