Is the Shih Tzu right for Jeypore?

The Shih Tzu does well in Jeypore, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important. For a playful, affectionate, gentle, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Jeypore

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Summer in Jeypore peaks in April at about 38°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with December nights around 12°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Jeypore are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
