Living with a Greyhound Puppy in Kaniha

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the east tend to find this dog a gentle, quiet, fast companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In humid coastal conditions water matters as much as food — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Kaniha

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Kaniha, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Space and the outdoors with a Greyhound Puppy

Homes around Kaniha usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

Kaniha is hottest in April, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Greyhound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 12°C.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Greyhound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
