Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Barmer

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Barmer, summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Keep unlimited fresh water available and add a cooling mat or shaded resting spot.

Is the Pointer Puppy right for Barmer?

Barmer is hot, dry — summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority — and the Pointer Puppy is a large-sized, loyal, loving, confident breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Keep unlimited fresh water available and add a cooling mat or shaded resting spot.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Grooming and coat care in Barmer

Barmer being hot, dry, summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Barmer is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Pointer needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A Pointer has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in August.

For a new Pointer puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
