Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, affectionate, gentle dog the fit is usually good either way.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Kotapally

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Kotapally is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
