The first week

Feeding a medium dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a medium build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In cold mountain conditions water matters as much as food — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 29°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Doodle that it is on the plains.

Winter nights drop to about 0°C in January. A Doodle copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Doodle puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, April, May and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
