Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Nainital

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Nainital, the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Older pets may need joint support as cold can stiffen movement.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Nainital usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners across North India tend to find this dog a playful, affectionate, gentle companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

The city sits at about 2,077 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 28°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Shih Tzu that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about -2°C in January. A Shih Tzu feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are May: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
