Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Dolvan

The dry summer months is the stretch that needs planning. Summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Red Collared Lorikeet than intensity ever will. Watch for signs of overheating — heavy panting, drooling or lethargy — during peak afternoons.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In hot, dry conditions water matters as much as food — summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Dolvan is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Red Collared Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Red Collared Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
