Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Puna

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Puna, daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Walk early in the morning or after sunset when the ground is cool, never on hot pavement.

Feeding a medium bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a medium frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, keep water available and watch intake through the dry summer months.

Living with a Budgies in Puna

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a medium-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Grooming and coat care in Puna

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, a Budgies's coat and skin want checking more often through the dry summer months. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Watch for signs of overheating — heavy panting, drooling or lethargy — during peak afternoons.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Puna is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Budgies needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Budgies bird, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
