The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a medium bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a medium frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a medium-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners across the North-Eastern states tend to find this bird a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 12°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Budgies bird, the easiest months to arrive are October to April: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
