Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Is the Chattering Lorikeet right for Devprayag?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Chattering Lorikeet adapts well to Devprayag on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

Space and the outdoors with a Chattering Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Health and vet care in Devprayag

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the cold winter season rather than during it. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Summer here peaks in May at about 33°C. That is manageable for a Chattering Lorikeet: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Chattering Lorikeet feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Chattering Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are April, May and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
