The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Is the Budgies right for Darjeeling?

Darjeeling is warm and humid — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips — and the Budgies is a medium-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Grooming and coat care in Darjeeling

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, a Budgies's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

The city sits at about 2,127 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 22°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Budgies that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 0°C in January. A Budgies feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

No month here is easy on every count for a Budgies, so plan the first two weeks around a cool, dry room rather than the calendar.
