Space and the outdoors with a Siamese Kitten

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a social, vocal, smart cat the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a small cat here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most kittens eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Is the Siamese Kitten right for Basanti?

Basanti is coastal tropical — the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention — and the Siamese Kitten is a small-sized, social, vocal, smart breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Basanti

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Siamese Kitten than intensity ever will. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Summer here peaks in April at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Siamese: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from May to October, and July is usually the wettest month. Dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Siamese kitten, the easiest months to arrive are November to April: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
