Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Living with a Kanni Puppy in Giddalur

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Giddalur

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. Moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Kanni Puppy than intensity ever will. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, shy, alert dog the fit is usually good either way.

Grooming and coat care in Giddalur

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Giddalur being coastal tropical, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Giddalur is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 16°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in September. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, July, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
