Is the Kanni Puppy right for Vakadu?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Kanni Puppy adapts well to Vakadu on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Health and vet care in Vakadu

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the long monsoon rather than during it. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in Vakadu

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Vakadu being coastal tropical, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Summer here peaks in May at about 37°C. That is manageable for a Kanni, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 21°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from October to November, and November is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, March, July, August and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
