The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in Vinjamur

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, a Kanni Puppy's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a larger coat, matting and trapped moisture are what to catch early. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Kanni Puppy. Owners throughout peninsular India tend to find this dog a loyal, shy, alert companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Vinjamur is hottest in April, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 17°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in October. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, July, August, September and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
