Space and the outdoors with a Pointer Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, loving, confident dog the fit is usually good either way.

Grooming and coat care in Barsur

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Barsur being continental plains, the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep deworming and vaccination on schedule — seasonal changes can stress the immune system.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the peak summer and winter swings in Barsur

The peak summer and winter swings is the stretch that needs planning. The wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Pointer Puppy than intensity ever will. Provide shade and constant water in summer; a warm bed and blanket in winter.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In continental plains conditions water matters as much as food — the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Barsur is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Pointer needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 12°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Pointer puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
