The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Kachchh?

Kachchh is warm and arid — summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority — and the Kanni Puppy is a large-sized, loyal, shy, alert breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Keep unlimited fresh water available and add a cooling mat or shaded resting spot.

Kachchh is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

Most of the year's rain falls in August. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, September and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
