Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Subir

The dry summer months is the stretch that needs planning. Daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Kanni Puppy than intensity ever will. A light summer trim (for double-coated breeds, never shave to the skin) helps comfort.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In hot, dry conditions water matters as much as food — daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, shy, alert dog the fit is usually good either way.

Subir is hottest in April, averaging 39°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
