Is the Kanni Puppy right for Dalhousie?

Dalhousie is cold mountain — winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority — and the Kanni Puppy is a large-sized, loyal, shy, alert breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Living with a Kanni Puppy in Dalhousie

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Kanni Puppy room to move and settle in comfortably. Owners across North India tend to find this dog a loyal, shy, alert companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In cold mountain conditions water matters as much as food — winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Homes around Dalhousie usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

The city sits at about 1,697 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 29°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 1°C in January. A Kanni feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are May, June and September: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
