Living with a Kanni Puppy in Devsar

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners across North India tend to find this dog a loyal, shy, alert companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Homes around Devsar usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Devsar?

Devsar is cool hill — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others — and the Kanni Puppy is a large-sized, loyal, shy, alert breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

The city sits at about 1,669 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 30°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about -1°C in January. A Kanni feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in July.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are May, June, August and September: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
