Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Arkalgud being pleasant semi-tropical, comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Is the Afghan Hound Puppy right for Arkalgud?

Arkalgud is pleasant semi-tropical — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward — and the Afghan Hound Puppy is a large-sized, aloof, dignified, independent breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Arkalgud

The brief pre-monsoon heat is the stretch that needs planning. Comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

The city sits at about 922 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summer here peaks in March at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Afghan Hound, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to April: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
