On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Bengaluru Urban?

Bengaluru Urban is pleasant semi-tropical — the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, playful, affectionate, gentle breed. The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

The city sits at about 920 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summer here peaks in April at about 35°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in September. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, July, August, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
