Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Terdal is hottest in April, averaging 39°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in July.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, August, September, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
