Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, shy, alert dog the fit is usually good either way.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Cherthala

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Cherthala, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Cherthala?

The Kanni Puppy does well in Cherthala, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important. For a loyal, shy, alert, large-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and humid conditions water matters as much as food — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 26°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from May to November, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are December to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
