Space and the outdoors with a Afghan Hound Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a aloof, dignified, independent dog the fit is usually good either way.

Grooming and coat care in Devikulam

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Devikulam being humid coastal, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Devikulam

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In humid coastal conditions water matters as much as food — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The city sits at about 1,594 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 26°C in March, so heat is rarely the problem for a Afghan Hound that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C.

The rainy season runs from May to November, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are December to April: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
