Living with a Kanni Puppy in Leh

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Kanni Puppy. Owners in the northern region tend to find this dog a loyal, shy, alert companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Leh?

Leh is cool hill — crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter — and the Kanni Puppy is a large-sized, loyal, shy, alert breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Health and vet care in Leh

Preventive care in Leh is largely a matter of anticipating the cold winter season. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Leh

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. Crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Kanni Puppy than intensity ever will. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

The city sits at about 3,502 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 24°C in July, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about -16°C in January. A Kanni feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in August.

No month here is easy on every count for a Kanni, so plan the first two weeks around a cool, dry room rather than the calendar.
