Living with a Kanni Puppy in LM

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the region's hills tend to find this dog a loyal, shy, alert companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Grooming and coat care in LM

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, a Kanni Puppy's coat and skin want checking more often through the extended rainy season. On a larger coat, matting and trapped moisture are what to catch early. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in LM

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In LM, near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for LM?

LM is lush, wet tropical — near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention — and the Kanni Puppy is a large-sized, loyal, shy, alert breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

LM is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
