Is the Kanni Puppy right for Machi?

The Kanni Puppy does well in Machi, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline. For a loyal, shy, alert, large-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Health and vet care in Machi

Preventive care in Machi is largely a matter of anticipating the extended rainy season. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Summer here peaks in May at about 33°C. That is manageable for a Kanni, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to July, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, April, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
