Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Grooming and coat care in Porompat

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Porompat being monsoon-heavy, rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 28°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
