Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Aizawl?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Kanni Puppy adapts well to Aizawl on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

The city sits at about 1,080 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 27°C in April, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 6°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from April to October, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
