The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In high-rainfall tropical conditions water matters as much as food — near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Amahator

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Amahator, near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

Living with a Pointer Puppy in Amahator

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Space and the outdoors with a Pointer Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, loving, confident dog the fit is usually good either way.

The city sits at about 2,215 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 22°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Pointer that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about -0°C in January. A Pointer feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

No month here is easy on every count for a Pointer, so plan the first two weeks around a cool, dry room rather than the calendar.
