Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, shy, alert dog the fit is usually good either way.

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Athibung, the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Athibung?

The Kanni Puppy does well in Athibung, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline. For a loyal, shy, alert, large-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 30°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Kanni that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
