The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Is the German Spitz Puppy right for Colliery?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The German Spitz Puppy adapts well to Colliery on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Living with a German Spitz Puppy in Colliery

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Grooming and coat care in Colliery

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Colliery being coastal tropical, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Colliery is hottest in April, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A German Spitz needs real protection from that: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 12°C. A light sweater helps a small German Spitz on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new German Spitz puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
